Frequently Asked QuestionsContact Information Which is the best way to contact me? These are the recommended ways to contact me: * The best way to contact me is by e-mail at [email protected]. I am usually able to check my e-mail during the school day. Although, if you have a change of transportation plans for your child, please be sure to send a note to school with your child. It is possible that I could be absent or unable to access my e-mail that day. If you have a last minute change of plans, please call the school office at 847-870-3875 and they will contact the classroom with the information. * Send a note to school with your child. Please make sure that your child understands that she/he needs give me or the teacher present the note when they enter the classroom. Transportation My child has a change in transportation. What should I do? * If there are any changes in the pickup procedures for your child, I must have a written note to that effect or I will have to follow the standard procedures previously set up with the office. If there is an emergency change, please call the school office at 847-870-3875 and they will notify me so that I can accommodate that change. Please do not leave messages regarding transportation on my e-mail or voicemail. Correspondence What should I do with notes, lunch money, etc., I need to send to school? * Please be sure that all mail to me has my name on it, just in case it gets lost. Mail for the office should be labeled OFFICE. If money or a check is being sent, please put it in a sealed envelope with my name on the outside as well as your child’s name. Place all mail in your child’s backpack and make sure that your child knows that s/he has mail to give me. I must rely on your child to tell me if they have mail to pass along. I am unable to look through every student’s backpack each day. Birthdays May I send a treat on my child’s birthday? Please read this message from our principal, Dr. Lambatos. Eisenhower staff will be practicing an alternative classroom birthday treat celebration as a way to promote a love of literacy as well as making a healthy choice over eating sugary snacks. In celebrating our little Eagle’s birthdays, we ask that you please send your child to school with a special story he/she enjoys. On your child’s birthday, the story will be read during his/her class time. Alternative dates will be chosen for summer birthdays. Please bring or send in your child’s favorite story to school. If you are unable to send in the story, the teacher will have a selection of stories your child may choose from. We will not be celebrating with food items or toy/treat bag items anymore. Celebrating your child’s birthday with a special time of reading his/her favorite story with his/her classmates is a wonderful way in which your child can share their interests and extend to their classmates a conversation about what is special in his/her life. Moreover, we are able to establish a culture that celebrates learning and honors your child rather than simply handing out food, which will be part of their own familial celebrations. It is our endeavor to create a special occasion where your child is able to share about him/herself while being celebrated by his/her classmates. On your child’s birthday, we will continue to read his/her birthday during morning announcements. We will also continue to have our Library Birthday Book Club where you may donate a book to our school library. Our school media specialist, Ms. Herzog, will then place your child’s name in the book and add it to our library collection. Also, the monthly birthday lunch celebration will continue with your child being honored with a special seat among his/her classmates who share a birthday during the same month. During this celebration, students will be invited to take turns at the microphone in our very own “Birthday Idol Celebration Singing Event”. All classroom teachers will continue with an all class rendition of “Happy Birthday” and provide a “keepsake” commemorating your child’s birthday on their very special day. It is of the utmost importance to us that the students learn celebrations are a time of sharing with one another. More importantly, these social conversations develop our ability to share with others at celebrations over the course of our lives. Promoting literacy is an added benefit of developing a classroom celebration that nurtures social-emotional skills. We look forward to a wonderful year with you and your child. Sincerely, Dr. Lambatos * If you are having a birthday party outside of school, and inviting students from our class, please send all birthday invitations through the U.S. mail. 2017-18 Specials Schedule P.E. - Tuesday and Tuesday/Thursday (1/2 of the class on Tuesday, 1/2 on Thursday). *Please remember, students must wear gym shoes to participate in P.E. activities. Library - Monday *Please remember to bring library books to return! Art - Tuesday/Thursday Computer Lab - Friday Lunch and Snack How does my child purchase hot lunch? Use this link to check the lunch menu: http://www.d23.org/FoodService1.aspx * We have snack time each morning in our full-day kindergarten class. At Eisenhower School the only snacks that are allowed are fresh fruit, or fresh vegetables that can be eaten by hand. Absences * If your child will be absent from school: We ask that you call your child's absence in to our school nurse by 8:45 A.M. State law requires us to contact you if your child is not in school and we have not heard from you. Absences should be called in to our attendance phone line - 847-870-3876 - not our school office number. Please dial "6" to leave a message about your child's absence. This number is available twenty-four hours a day, so you may call your child's absence in as soon as you realize he/she will not be in school. Calling this number does not require anyone in the office to write a note to report the absence. This saves time and helps insure that Mrs. Szos knows your child will not be in school so that you do not receive a phone call from her asking where your child is. * If you know in advance that your child will be absent you may send a note to class and I will relay that information to the office. Homework What type of homework will my child bring home? Homework Books and Reading A to Z Books: * One or more Homework books will be sent home each Thursday in the white HOMEWORK envelope. Please read the book with your child and sign the included form. Books stamped HOME are to be kept at home in your child’s Book Box. If your child brings home a book stamped SCHOOL, please send that book back to class. Those books go into their Book Box in the classroom. The children will read individually with us to track reading progress. *Word Wheels It is very important to practice the Word Wheels that we send home each week. This activity helps to develop the skill of rhyming and it is an important aid to reading. * We will also occasionally send home additional books for you and your child to read. Of course, it is always important that you and your child read all the other materials we send home. The Word Wheels, Rhyme Books and other resources have been reviewed in the classroom, but the learning must continue at home for your child to be successful. Recess Policy Our full-day kindergarten class will have outdoor recess after lunch every day except for days when the weather is bad or the wind chill is below 10 degrees F. Students will not be allowed to stay indoors unless a doctor’s note states that he/she must remain indoors. On days when there is snow on the ground, students will be allowed to play in the snow only if they are wearing boots, snow pants, a hat, and gloves. If they do not have boots and snowpants, students must stay on the shoveled and cleared blacktop area. |
